I am drawing late night mutants bc I watched the X-Men movie, someone draw and plot mutants with me right now

What is 50 shades of grey about? And what's so bad about it?

50 Shades of Grey was originally fanfiction based on the Twilight series, which was then published as a novel (along with 2 subsequent books). It sold over 100 million copies around the world and topped best-seller lists everywhere. It’s about to be adapted into a film, set to come out early next year.

It follows a college student named Ana Steele, who enters a relationship with a man named Christian Grey and is then introduced to a bastardised and abusive parody of BDSM culture.

While the book is paraded as erotica, the relationship between Ana and Christian is far from healthy. The core mantra of the BDSM community is “safe, sane and consensual”, and 50 Shades is anything but. None of the rules of BDSM practices (which are put in place to protect those involved) are actually upheld. Christian is controlling, manipulative, abusive, takes complete advantage of Ana, ignores safe-words, ignores consent, keeps her uneducated about the sexual practices they’re taking part in, and a multitude of other terrible things. Their relationship is completely sickening and unhealthy.

Basically, “the book is a glaring glamorisation of violence against women,” as Amy Bonomi so perfectly put it.

It’s terrible enough that a book like this has been absorbed by people worldwide. Now, we have a film that is expected to be a huge box-office success, and will likely convince countless more young women that it’s okay not to have any autonomy in a relationship, that a man is allowed to control them entirely. It will also show many young men that women are theirs to play with and dominate, thus contributing to antiquated patriarchal values and rape culture.

Boycott this fucking movie, for the love of god. These kinds of ideas are dangerous and set us back as a society

Screw writing WHITEstrong women. Write interesting women of color. Write well-rounded women of color. Write complicated women of color. Write a woman of color who kicks ass, write a woman of color who cowers in a corner. Write a woman of color who’s desperate for a husband. Write a woman of color who doesn’t need a man. Write women of color who cry, women of color who rant, women of color who are shy, women of color who don’t take no shit, women of color who need validation and women of color who don’t care what anybody thinks. THEY ARE ALL OKAY, and all those things could exist in THE SAME WOMAN. Women of color shouldn’t be valued because we are strong, or kick-ass, but because we are people. So don’t focus on writing characters who are whiteStrong. Write characters who are people.

White feminists who boycotted Pacific Rim because they believed that Mako Mori is a step back in feminism are one of the reasons why I don’t seek solidarity. White feminists don’t understand how significant the character Mako Mori is. Whenever East Asian women are represented in the media they’re portrayed as submissive, China Dolls, Dragon Ladies, Lotus flowers, and Mako Mori is a BIG ”fuck you” to the Entertainment industry that continues to perpetuate these racist stereotypes. But no, you white feminists HAD to boycott the movie, attempting to convince others to do the same and y’all said absolutely nothing about the White washing of Katniss Everdeen, who is a woman of color, and how they prevented women of color from auditioning for the role.
If you are a white woman and you want to call yourself a feminist, you must acknowledge that your whiteness affords you a privilege that shields you from a lot. You must also acknowledge that you are afforded privileges that some men in this country do not have. Racism and sexism are tightly intertwined. You cannot fight one while ignoring the other.

damn okay

there are certain characters/families in the Harry Potter canon that are described as having fair or pale skin, the Potter line isn’t one of them. Harry and James both have canonically jet-black untidy hair but no canon ethnicity. Harry has “great skin”.
